Suriname Back

Suriname has an intriguing combination of Dutch, Asian and African roots, evident in it's culture, festivals and food.  The people of Suriname are among the most diverse in the world. Over 80% of Suriname is pristine rainforest, home to jaguar, giant armaillo, giant river otter, tapir, sloth, eight species of primates and 400 bird species such as the Harpy eagle and the Guiana Cock of the Rocks, as well as Amerindian and Maroon villages. The contrast of colonial old Amsterdam, the Commewijne plantations and the amazon rainforest makes Suriname an incredibly varied experience for visitors.

Suriname's main language is Dutch, the currency is the Surinamese Dollar.

The best time to visit is during the two dry seasons between February to late April and August to December. Turtle nesting season is April to July.
