Armenia

Armenia may be a small country but it’s big on history, culture, and beautiful scenery. One of the countries of the Caucasus bridging Europe and Asia, Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301AD, and the centuries-old monasteries scattered about the country are a key part of any travel itinerary here. One such monument is the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery, which contains a number of churches and tombs and is perhaps the finest example of Armenian medieval architecture.

Apart from the thousands of historical sites, you’ll be delighted by the dramatic landscapes, including the vast Lake Sevan, one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the world, and the many mountains and mountain valleys which provide stunning backdrops for a cultural tour. Then there’s the thriving capital city, Yerevan, at the foot of the mountains on the edge of the Ararat plain. Over recent years Yerevan has developed quite rapidly into a friendly hub of cosmopolitan life, with wonderful street fashion, chic wine bars, charming outdoor cafes, traditional and modern restaurants, and a flourishing contemporary arts scene.
