Foreign Travel Advice

This journey takes us deep into heartlands of the ancient Silk Route. Starting in the bizarre city of Ashgabat, we overland across the remote and inhospitable deserts of Turkmenistan to the incredible burning gas crater of Darvaza and the crumbling ancient ruins of Konye Urgench, before crossing into the fascinating country of Uzbekistan. It is in Uzbekistan that we'll discover the jewels in the crown of the fabled journey of the Silk Road, at the ancient cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. History and stunning architecture vie for prominence in each city, and the wealth of culture and local heritage is breathtaking; the bazaars and souks are fascinating. North of the Oxus River lies the Kyzylkhum Desert, where we will overnight in a yurt stay before heading to the great city of Tashkent for a bit of R&R and old fashioned night clubs.

Explore the unique Turkmen capital of Ashgabat on a guided tour

3 nights in Bukhara with guided tour of the many unique sites

This is a comfortable trip, with only limited camping. It can be extremely hot and dry in the summer when we visit, however, which can be challenging; ideal for lovers of history and stunning monuments. It is great also for "eclectic shoppers" in the bazaars and markets of Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent.

Robert B

It was an excellently organised and sensibly adaptive tour (adaptive to the needs of the group, and the weather). I really enjoyed it, and would go on more Dragoman tours as soon as I can.

PEDRO ALEXANDRE M

Jalol (Uzbekistan) was probably the best guide I've ever had. Rustam (Turkmenistan) is a very good guide and extremely professional trying to help us with all the problems (Turkmenistan is not an easy country).

Desislava S

It was nice and pleasant trip which i will remember for a long time:)

Kushal I

On long trips or when spirits were down, Domingo did a wonderful job at cheering people up. Euan the driver was great, he drove very well, and had a very good attitude.

Charles M

Jalol in Uzbekistan was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, caring, and attentive; he constantly went above and beyond his guide duties to ensure every single one of the group was looked after.

Lee C

A well put together itinerary and a smooth, seamless travel experience

Emma H

I have never wild camped before and I found the entire trip experience fabulous. Everyone chipped in and I quickly became familiar with the truck and how incredible it is for camping with no other facilities!

Caroline M

I booked the trip at the last minute and was drawn to the fact it went to Uzbekistan. I was slightly apprehensive about the overlanding but need not have worried at all as I absolutely loved it!!! One of my best holidays ever.

Melanie L

Fantastic, just what I hoped for!

Frazer K

This was my first experience of travel as part of an organised group and was impressed with both the overall Dragoman organisation and the staff on the trip.

Peter J

Jalol was really funny - one of the best guides we have ever come across.

Eleni D

I loved the evenings by a fire at camp sites/ the crater/ our short swim in the lake

Susan B

The visit to the burning crater was THE highlight, and the two nights meals that were cooked by my travel companions.

Matthew S

Really enjoyed it!

Pauline F

The towns were just beautiful and the people so friendly and delightful. The camping was fun and the yurts too. I also loved crossing the desert and just experiencing a different way of life.

Katsuhiko Y

The leader, was a very experienced professional. Both local guides were excellent. Ample free time made the tour relaxing.

Janet G

Excellent itinerary and fantastic Drago crew

David A

It was great

Devra A

Enjoyed the company and the experience of visiting such magical places. The camping nights were wonderful.

Melanie S

Just fantastic, I would have to say that I enjoyed the journey and the Dragoman experience as much as visiting the various countries themselves.

Yvonne D

Both the driver and co-driver were excellent and their driving was top-class along with their people skills, as they were challenged a little by one client on this trip and Tim was just brilliant in how he handled the situation. I was very impressed with this and he has a fantastic way about him so really suited to this job.

Richard D

Guides were helpful and friendly!

Patricia R

Jalol in Uzbekistan was very helpful and incredibly knowledgeable.

Paul H

Tim and Lynsey were great; both were laid-back, extremely reliable and on-the-ball; inspired confidence at all times.

Jennifer P

Excellent work from both Rob and Amanda, can't praise them enough.

Kate C

Great team!

Sofie P

Jalal in Uzbekistan was excellent.

Joseph K

Jalol was our guide in Uzbekistan and he was - far and away - the best guide we've had. He was full of information, gave us detailed explanations of the sights we were visiting (even quizzed us on them), constantly put events in perspective with respect to the local culture, and was a great story teller. He was full of tips and ideas, and went out of his way to help members of the group who wanted to do optional activities. Jalol was a big part of making Uzbekistan a most memorable part of our journey.

Charleen K

Jalol was my favorite local guide. He knew so much history about Uzbeckistan. He had a great sense of humor and was extremely helpful and willing to go out of his way to accommodate our wishes.

Graham T

All the equipment and the vehicle was very highly suitable for this kind of trip and added a real sense of character, community and togetherness to the group.

Thomas D

Nick and Euan were both good people and I enjoyed being on the trip with them.

Nina W

Uzbekistan guide was really really great.

Thirumalai Govindan P

Excellent team, very committed and good leadership.

Robyn D

Jalol was a first rate guide. He was knowledgable, considerate of the whole group and fun. He shared his personal thoughts about his country, which was of great interest to me as a traveller there.

Peter R

Jalol was always enthusiastic, extremely well informed, ready, willing and very able to take the initiative regardless of circumstances - he was faultless in my view.

Elizabeth M

The absolute best!

Christine G

Ilia our guide in Uzbekistan was great.

Elliot C

The two group leaders were amazing.

Eric Albert Clara Da B

Jalol, the guide in Uzbekistan, was very knowledgeable and helpful.

JOAN L

Both Tim and Lynsey worked very well together and were very helpful.
