Botswana is one of the finest safari destinations in Africa. With 17% of the country covered by National Parks, the wildlife is as diverse as the landscapes - there are over 85 species of mammals and well over 1000 types of birds that reside in the country, with a boat trip in Chobe National Park being one of the best places to observe elephants in the region.
The sand of the Kalahari Desert covers most of Botswana, and in the east there are the vast salt pans of Makgadikgadi. With very little rainfall, these areas are a perfect habitat for some of Botswana's iconic wildlife. On the other end of the scale, another of Botswana's massive highlights is the Okavango Delta, where the Okavango River drains into and never reaches the ocean - this is one of the most scenic areas of the world and is packed full of wildlife. A trip in the local 'mokoros' to wild camp on the delta's islands is one of the most magical experiences in Africa!
Botswana is also home to a variety of cultures, perhaps most famously the San tribe - masters of desert survival, this incredible civilisation still thrives in their traditional lifestyle in the Kalahari.
